Apple has finally announced its long awaited new iPhone SE 2020. This iPhone has been anticipated and speculated about for a long time because it is the first low-cost iPhone Apple has ever released. Some might even say that it is the cheapest iPhone of all time! In this post, we are going to talk a deep look at the freshly announced iPhone SE 2020. After checking all of its specs, we are going to tell you if it is in fact the cheapest iPhone or not. The iPhone SE is going to be available for pre-orders on April 17th and the official launch date announced by Apple is going to be one week after that, April 24th.
The iPhone SE 2020 design and key features
The new iPhone SE of 2020 is expected to come at the price point of £320 ($399) which is approximately the same price of the old iPhone SE at its launch time and this is something in itself as users are most definitely getting more features and better specs. So, first, let's take a look at what the new iPhone SE has to offer as Apple's newest and first budget iPhone in a very long time!
Since the design is the very first thing that catches your eyes in any smartphone and it is one of the most speculated things when it comes to Apple iPhones especially, it is important to take a look at the iPhone SE 2020 design before getting into the more technical details.
So, The design of the new iPhone SE 2020 is an interesting mix of the OG iPhone SE design and the new upgraded design that we started seeing with the iPhone X. Of course, there is the home button with the built-in fingerprint scanner. This is huge news for all those who have been missing the clicking of this button and unlocking their iPhones in the traditional way. Of course, having to unlock your iPhone with a Face ID while wearing a face mask is completely impractical which makes the return of the fingerprint scanner to the iPhone SE 2 at this point in time very opportune, to say the least.
As for the upgrade with the iPhone SE 2020 it is the fact that the screen is larger, 4.7 inches, and the side bezels are pushed further to allow more screen space. The top and bottom bezels are also smaller. So, essentially, it is a bigger screen and it does not have that notch on top which annoys many users, especially when watching videos in landscape mode.
Another obvious point in the design is the absence of a 3.5mm jack or earphone jack which is curious to say the least. Considering that the iPhone SE 2020 is a budget iPhone, it would have made sense for it to have the option of using the traditional earphones given that the alternative is the super expensive airpods or, at the very lease, using a dongle which means additional cost on the user's budget. Yet, for some reason, Apple chose to stay on its wireless track and eliminate the 3.5mm earphones from the new iPhone SE equation.
While this is an obvious down side for many users who are missing the true essence of the iPhone SE / iPhone 5 design language, Apple's choice of the wireless culture has added a huge advantage to this phone which is the wireless charging! The mere idea of having wireless charging in a budget phone, let alone the iPhone, is mind-blowing, but they did it! The iPhone SE 2020 has a glass back and it supports wireless charging.
The new Apple iPhone SE 2 performance potential
While some people are debating that the Apple iPhone SE is the same as the iPhone 8, we don't see that due to the mere fact that the iPhone SE 2 has the inner parts of an iPhone 11. First, the iPhone SE 2 has an Apple A13 Bionic chipset which is Apple's latest processor and it offers more than 2x the speed of its predecessor, the A9. It goes without saying that this is a better chip than the one on the iPhone 8, which is the A11.Comparisons aside, it is important to take a look at what difference this change, or upgrade, makes in the iPhone SE 2. Well, This processor lifts the performance and quality of the iPhone SE 2020 camera, graphics, launching apps, and gaming experience. AR apps and games are going to be taken to a whole new level with this processor power as well in the iPhone SE 2. Keep in mind that all of these aspects are not only improved compared to the old iPhone SE, but compared to the iPhone 8 as well.
Charging and battery life of the iPhone SE 2020
As we stated earlier, the iPhone SE 2020 is featuring a wireless charging capability. The battery, however, is only 1821 mAh which is another aspect to you'd have to compromise on when deciding to buy the new Apple's budget phone. But still, we would have to wait and see in the hands-on experience when the iPhone SE 2 is released to the public to know how this battery capacity will perform in real life. After all, Apple iPhones specs on paper often don't reflect a just image of what's the true performance is going to be like. All we have for now is the info that this battery supports fast charging and that it can be charged up to 50% of its full capacity in only 30 minutes. This is, of course, assuming that you are going to buy the 18W adapter for the fast charging privileges separately as the iPhone SE 2 will come with a small 5W adapter in the phone box.
The iPhone SE 2020 cameras & display
It is known very well now that any flagship must come with an AMOLED display or, at least, on of it variations. The reason for this is that this Samsung display technology offers the best quality of colors and detailing. Since the iPhone SE 2020 is meant to be a budget phone, it was expected that wouldn't come with an AMOLED screen. So, no big surprises here. Moreover, it is not that much of a compromise with the Retina IPS LCD screen as it is one of the best of Apple's creations when it comes to screen technology. This 4.7-inch Retina display comes with a 750 x 1334 pixels resolution and 16:9 ratio. The screen has True Tone technology that helps the phone adjust its color balance according to ambient light. Although the resolution is not full HD which was, once again, expected at this price point, Apple has supported the iPhone SE 2 display with Dolby Vision as well as HDR 10.
Moving on to the main camera system, this is the first recycled camera experience Apple is offering in its iPhones. Although it is a single camera on the rear, Apple is claiming that it is one of the best camera systems that can be offered in a single lens. The rear camera is 12MP with a f/1.8 aperture. These numbers are quite similar to those of the iPhone XR. The difference here with the iPhone SE 2020 is the Neural Engine that is provided by the A13 Bionic processor as it leverages the camera's processor's performance. This means that the iPhone SE 2 camera is better than that of the iPhone XR and the iPhone 8 as well.
Although the iPhone SE 2 does not have a setting in its camera software for night mode, Apple is assuring its users that the camera's performance in low-light settings will not be disappointing either.
On the other hand, the portrait mode in the main camera system comes with 6 different lighting effects as well as the ability for the user to adjust the photo's depth. Despite the lack of a second lens for the depth sensor, Apple was able to pull this off with the semantic rendering. The camera also has HDR, optical image stabilization, and auto-focus. The rear camera records 4K (2160p) videos and it is accompanied by a Dual-LED dual-tone flash. With the image stabilization, this phone is perfect for shooting high-quality and smooth-looking videos even on the move.
The selfie camera located in the top bezel in the front of the iPhone SE 2 is supported by the monocular depth estimation technology which allows it to capture portraits with bokeh effects. The selfie camera also has HDR, Face Detection, and it can shoot full HD (1080p) videos. In more ways than not, this is a superior selfie camera.
If you have been contemplating the idea of buying an iPhone but have been also dreading the expensive price tags that Apple phones always come with, the iPhone SE 2020 is your chance now to get your hands-on experience of the latest iOS at the lowest price point possible. The iPhone SE 2 is worth its price and offers great value in return.
